Many people believe the best kind of bedding for winter is a heavy quilt.
However, this is not always the case. While a quilt can provide extra warmth on cold nights, it can also be difficult to move around under or even too hot for some people.
Another option for getting warm with some winter bedding is a set of winter bed sheets. These are typically made from a thicker material than regular bed sheets, which helps to keep you warm at night. Layering also tends to allow for more breathability, meaning you stay warm without overheating throughout the night, as you might with an overly thick, heavy winter quilt.
Layering your bed for winter doesn't have to be complicated. Simply start with your preferred set of sheets, and top it off with a quilt, coverlet or comforter.
If you want your bed to get really cosy, you can also add a blanket into the mix or an additional coverlet to throw over the top of the quilt. Just ensure you're not using too many layers, as this can make it difficult to move around in bed unless you prefer the weighted sensation.
The type of winter bedding you choose will depend on your personal preferences. Some people prefer bed linen made from natural materials, such as wool or down, while others prefer the higher insulating properties of synthetic materials such as polyester.
We recommend choosing an option that is machine washable if you prefer a no-fuss approach to cleaning, but some of our non-machine washable quilt options offer a greater degree of luxury, like a feather and down. To keep these kinds of quilts clean, make sure you air them frequently, exposing the fill to fresh air and sunlight to help kill bacteria.
Here's a 4-step guide to keeping your bed warm in winter:
Step 1: Start with a mattress protector or topper
A mattress protector is an essential piece of bedding for any season, but it's especially important in winter.
Not only will it protect your mattress from spills and stains, but it will also help to insulate your bed and keep you warm at night. One of our best mattress underlays is the Reversible Luxury Wool Fitted Underlay by Woolstar Eco. It‘s made from 100% Australian wool, with one side lined with 350GSM wool fleece for winter and the other with a soft cotton japara fabric for warmer months.

Step 2: Add a winter bed sheet
Once you've got your mattress protector in place, it's time to add a winter bed sheet set. If you tend to get warm quickly or find yourself overheating in the middle of the night, look for a sheet made from a breathable material like washed cotton or linen. This will help to regulate your body temperature and prevent you from getting too hot or too cold during the night. If you get cold easily and find yourself shivering in the middle of the night, try and opt for a warmer fabric, like a cotton jersey, flannelette or a polyester sheet.

Step 3: Layer up with a quilt
Adding a quilt is the traditional way to add an extra layer of warmth to your bed and is typically responsible for adding the most weight and/or bulk. Again, look for a quilt that's filled with natural materials like wool or down if you tend to overheat, as these will keep you warm but also regulate temperature and prevent you from getting too hot. On the other hand, synthetic fill quilts trap heat and are ideal for anyone that struggles to maintain warmth throughout the night.

Step 4: Add a bedspread, coverlet or comforter
A bedspread or coverlet is a decorative piece of bedding that can also help to keep you warm at night. Look for a style made from heavyweight fabric like velvet or Chenille, as these will provide an extra layer of insulation. We recommend this as a great alternative for people that don’t use more common bedding options like quilts, opting instead to pile on several blankets and need a decorative finish for the bed. This method also offers great versatility for people that live in areas with fluctuating climates, where one night is much warmer than the next.
