For the first time, green electricity generated in Tibet will be delivered to Beijing, following the successful completion of a market-based green power transaction, according to the Beijing Electric Power Trading Center. Starting January 1, 2025, green energy from Tibet will officially enter Beijing’s market.

The transaction involved 56 market participants from both regions, securing a preliminary deal for approximately 15 million kilowatt-hours of electricity. The power will be sourced mainly from solar energy projects in Lhasa, Shannan, Shigatse, and Nagqu.

Zhang Chenda, a trading specialist at the Beijing Electric Power Trading Center, stated, "The green electricity from Tibet will be supplied to various market-based users in Beijing, including the National Centre for the Performing Arts, the Capital Museum, and the Capital Library. This transaction not only facilitates the integration of renewable energy in Tibet but also expands the channels for green energy delivery to Beijing."

Since launching its green power trading initiative in 2021, Beijing has progressively sourced renewable energy from Shanxi, Hebei, Inner Mongolia, and other regions. In 2024, the city recorded 770,000 green certificate transactions and 5.05 billion kilowatt-hours of green power trading, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 4.03 million tons.
